Levi Bachmeier Announces Campaign for North Dakota Superintendent of Public Instruction
Bismarck, N.D. — Levi Bachmeier, an educator, policy leader, and current Superintendent of Public Instruction, today announced his campaign to lead the North Dakota Department of Public Instruction, outlining a vision centered on strong schools, great teachers, engaged families, and classroom-focused accountability.
Bachmeier is running on a simple belief: North Dakota thrives when its kids thrive. His campaign is focused on ensuring every child—regardless of background, ZIP code, or family income—has access to an effective, exceptional education that prepares them for college, career, military service, and success in life.
“Our public schools are good today, but we can be great,” Bachmeier said. “That starts with putting kids first, supporting great teachers, and making sure resources are going where they matter most: into the classroom, not bureaucracy.”
A former teacher and coach, Bachmeier brings a values-driven, common-sense approach to education leadership. He believes in setting high expectations, focusing on fundamentals, and relentlessly encouraging growth—principles shaped by his experience both in the classroom and at the policy level.
Appointed Superintendent of Public Instruction by Governor Kelly Armstrong in October 2025, Bachmeier was selected for his proven record of driving innovation, strengthening accountability, and keeping student outcomes at the center of decision-making. As Superintendent, he chairs the state committee that screens candidates for the North Dakota Board of Higher Education and serves on more than a dozen boards and councils, including the Education Standards and Practices Board, the K-12 Education Coordination Council, and the Career and Technical Education Board, helping shape education policy from early learning through workforce preparation. He also serves on the Board of University and School Lands, providing oversight to support responsible trust land development, strengthen trust funds, and protect long-term value for North Dakota’s educational and public institutions.
Prior to assuming his role as Superintendent of Public Instruction on Nov. 24, 2025, Bachmeier served as Business Manager for the West Fargo School District, where he managed resources responsibly while prioritizing student success during a period of rapid growth. Earlier in his career, he taught high school social studies and advised Governor Doug Burgum on education policy as part of the state’s Innovative Education Task Force.
As Superintendent, Bachmeier’s priorities include improving student outcomes, responsibly expanding school choice while protecting public schools, and respecting, rewarding, and retaining great teachers through efficient, accountable spending.
“The Department of Public Instruction should be a partner, not a barrier,” Bachmeier said. “Families care about how schools are run, what students are learning, and whether they’re being prepared for life. I’ll work alongside parents, educators, and communities to make sure every student graduates ready for the real world.”
A West Fargo native and graduate of Concordia College, Bachmeier believes deeply in North Dakota’s schools and the educators who serve in them. His campaign emphasizes collaboration, transparency, and a balanced curriculum that combines strong academic fundamentals with future-focused innovation.
“North Dakota’s schools didn’t become strong by accident,” Bachmeier said. “With the right leadership, they can lead the nation.”
